Johnsons’ Meadow

Johnsons’ Meadow

Following some concerns raised by the Parishioners, the Parish Council wishes to determine the recent history (last 20 or so years) of an informal path which crosses Johnsons' Meadow (not the 2 existing recognised public footpaths). Last year Natural England designated Johnson's Meadows as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the meadows are clearly a wonderful asset to the village and the Parish Council supports the designation. However, concerns have been raised that a potentially long-standing footpath is now being lost. Natural England have advised the Parish Council that IF the path has been used by the public, uninterrupted, without force, without secrecy and without permission for 20+ years then a public right of way may have become established. Natural England have encouraged the Parish Council to review the Path with the Access Authority (Leicestershire County Council) to see whether the path can be added to the 'definitive map of public rights of way'. Natural England have advised that given that the path certainly existed before the SSSI designation then the use of the path does not damage the SSSI.

So, the Parish Council is now seeking evidence to determine if and how the path has been used over the past 20 years or more. Based on this evidence the Parish Council will determine whether a request should be made to the Access Authority to add the path to the 'definitive map of public rights of way' and be protected for public use into the future.

If you have used the path now or in the past, please get in touch with Emma Crowe at clerk@woodhouseparishcouncil.org.uk or telephone 07739 808871.
